July 2008

The owners of Spa Koru, Joe and Tami Thompson, and their two children Ellisa, 17, and Elijah, 15, have been parking cars for the July 4 fireworks celebration at the Avon Pier for the past four years. They block off the parking lots to Spa Koru and the HealthEast Family Care medical center, which is directly across the highway from the pier and charge $5 a car for parking. They raised $415 dollars this year and donated all the proceeds to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation. Over the last four years, they have donated more than $1,000

Joe states, “Every one of us will be affected by cancer in our lives -- either personally or a love one…I can’t think of a better cause to give to. The foundation does so much good on a local level. Hatteras Island is my home, and that is where my heart is.”

Spa Koru is the island’s only fully service spa, fitness, salon, and yoga studio. It is open year round. Spa Koru is a cultural landmark on Hatteras Island for locals and guest alike.

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation assists Hatteras Island cancer patients and their families in their fight against cancer.  If you would like more information, please call (252) 986-2170 or go to the web site at www.hicf.org.

Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation forming support group

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation is asking for help from islanders.  If you are a cancer survivor, recently diagnosed with cancer, a caregiver, or know someone whose life has been affected by cancer or just someone with extra time on your hands, the foundation needs you.

The foundation is in the process of forming a support and educational group concerning issues surrounding cancer and its management and prevention.

According to statistics, Dare County mortality rates exceed the state rates for breast and lung cancer.

If you are interested in participating in a support/ educational group, please contact any one of the following:

The Hatteras Island Cancer foundation is a non-profit group that was founded in 2000 to help islanders pay medical and drug expenses not covered by insurance and to help them with travel expenses for treatment.

March 2008

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation is the recipient of a $5,000.00 grant from the Charles Finch Gaddy Gift Fund, a component fund of the North Carolina Community Foundation.  This grant is given in memory of Lucy Gaddy and will be used to assist Hatteras Island residents with their fight against cancer.  The HICF would like to recognize the Gaddy family and thank them for their support.
